3.1.1 Why
can't I log into SOUL?
If you are not able to log in, first make sure you have entered with
the correct SOUL ID and Password pair. And check that there is no
space before your SOUL ID or password. Please note that the second
and the third characters of your SOUL ID are numeric (i.e. 00, 01,
02, etc). Finally make sure that your security settings of your browser
are set to default. Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security
tab and check that the "Default Level" is selected. Then
go to Privacy tab and check that the "Medium Level" is selected.
If you
have a toolbar installed in your browser (for example, Google and
Yahoo! offer free pop-up blocker software), the "pop-up blocker"
function must be turned off. For details, please refer to question
3.1.2.

3.1.2 I have entered my SOUL ID and Password correctly, but my SOUL Welcome page is not shown. What I can do?
Please make sure that the "pop-up blocker" function of any toolbar that has been installed in your browser (for example, Yahoo! and Google toolbar) must be turned off. By default, most pop-up blockers are enabled upon installation.
Steps to override the default settings of pop-up blockers:

3.1.3 Why
am I unable to access the Conference Room on the SOUL System?
As the Conference Room is not implemented with SSL (Secure Socket
Layer), on entering a non-secure environment, the security information
is prompted. To proceed to the Conference Room, users are required
to click "Yes". In case users click "No", the
users will not be led to the Conference Room but a message of "Navigation
Cancelled" will be displayed. He/she will require to re-log into
the SOUL System and try again. |

3.1.4 Why
can’t I get into the Chat Room?
First, check whether the window of the Chat Room has been shown. Second,
if a blank window with a security dialog box is shown, click Yes to continue.
Then, if a prompt for the installation of Macromedia Flash Player 7 is shown, install
the software by following the instructions provided.
Please ensure that you have permission to install new software on
your computer. For example, if you are using a home computer with
Windows XP, please check with the owner of the computer before you
try to install new software.
If you have installed the Macromedia Flash Player
before, please check if the version is the latest one. Go to the Downloads section of
the Macromedia Web site and try to install the latest version of Flash Player. If "Installation Complete" is shown, you have the latest version installed.
If you
have a toolbar installed in your browser (for example, Google and
Yahoo offer free pop-up blocker software), the "pop-up blocker"
function must be turned off for the Chat Room to work. This can
generally be done from the "Options"
menu.

3.2.1 How
can I check my browser settings are okay?
The security setting with "Default level" in your browser
allows you to use all the features on the SOUL System. Follow the
steps below to check your browser settings:

needs a Flash Player?
All of the audio and videos delivered under the Flexi-learning uses
Flash. In order to listen to the sounds and view the videos, a Macromedia
Flash Player is required to be installed. Besides, in order to enter the Chat Room and participate in the Chat Room sessions, the Macromedia Flash Player 7 is required. Click here

3.4.1 How can I upload a notes file onto the
SOUL System?
To upload a single-file note: |

1. Login your SOUL account.
2. Select the appropriate course under "My Course".
3. On the course main page, click on Notes on the left
navigation menu.
4. The screen for Course Notes is shown.
5. Select the Single File option.
6. Press the Post New Notes button.
7. The screen for Post Course Notes is shown.
8. Enter the Notes Title and Description.
9. Enter the Release Date. If this field is left empty, the
note file will be available to learners after the upload
process. Click on the calendar icon to call up a calendar for
a date selection.
10. Press the Browse button.
11. Go to the destination folder where the file of notes is
located and select the file.
12. Press the Open button.
13. The path and filename of the selected file are shown in
the File field.
14. Press the Upload button.
15. The Course Notes screen is refreshed with the new entry of
the notes posted. |

3.4.2 How can I upload a file of assignment
questions onto SOUL System for students to retrieve? Besides, can I
receive their assignment works online?
You can upload the file of assignment questions to Assignment
sub-section under the relevant course. If you want students to
submit their work online, you can choose the Online Submission
option when you upload the assignment questions.
To upload a single-file assignment question: |

2. Select the appropriate course under "My Course".
3. On the course main page, click on Assignment on the left
navigation menu.
4. The screen for Course Assignment is shown.
5. Select the Single File option.
6. Press the Post New Assignment button.

3.4.4 I want to provide students with other
reading materials besides notes, to which section should I upload
the files?
Besides notes, assignments and past exam papers, you may have
other reference materials for learners. You can upload these reading
materials to the General Documents sub-section under the relevant
course so that learners can retrieve them easily.
To upload a single-file document: |

3. On the course main page, click on General Documents on the
left navigation menu.
4. The screen for General Document is shown.
5. Select the Single File option.

9. Press the Browse button.

located and select the file.

3.4.5 How
can I submit an assignment onto the SOUL System?
To upload an assignment to the SOUL System, learner can follow steps
below:

Login to your SOUL account.
2. Select the appropriate course under "My Course".
3. Select the icon "Assignment" on
the left-hand navigation menu under "My Course" heading.
4. Click on the "Submit" link.
5. Go to the destination where the file you want to upload is
located and select the file.
6. Press the Open button.
7. Press the Submit button. |
| Ensure
that the filename of the uploaded file contains less than 30
characters (including the file extension) and no spaces. |

3.4.6 Why
am I unable to upload the materials onto the SOUL System?
SOUL system sets the file size limit for one-time upload to be 50M.
If you want to upload a folder, which is over 50M, the SOUL System
will not process your request. Therefore, if you want to upload a
folder over 50M, please arrange the files into a set of folders and
upload them one by one. Besides, the filename of your uploaded file
should contain less than 80 characters, and without Chinese characters or other special symbols like &!@#$%-+=.

3.4.7 What
is the file size limit for each upload?
The maximum file size for each upload is 50MB in the Notes, Assignments,
Past Papers, General Documents sections. For Conference Room, it is
limited to 3MB.

3.4.8 In
the coming semester, I am going to teach some topics that are the
same as the ones of the previous semester. Some of the uploaded materials
can be used in the new courses and, it is time-consuming to post the
materials once more. What should I do?
You can use the Copy and Paste function to copy teaching materials
from the last semester’s courses to the new ones.
To copy a document file from other course, please follow the steps
below:

1.
Go to the course from which the document file will be copied.
2. On the document screen (e.g. Course Notes) of the source
course, press the Copy Document to Other Course(s)
button.
3. From the document list, select the file(s) to be copied.
To copy all the files, press the Select All
button.
4. Press the Next button.
5. Select the destination course(s) from the list to which the
document file(s) will be pasted.
6. Press the Next button.
7. Press the OK button in the confirmation dialog box.
8. Go to the destination course(s) to view the pasted file(s).
To update the information of the pasted file, click on the “Edit”
link displayed against the document title.

3.4.9 I want to provide my students with the
course outline via SOUL. What should I do?
To provide a course outline to students, you can post the relevant
materials on the Course Main Page as Course Description that will
be shown to the students immediately when they visit the course.
This helps provide students with a clear picture of the course.
Besides, you can include other information in the Course
Description, like your teaching schedule, reference textbook, etc.
To upload single-file course description: |

have uploaded a wrong file for the course description. How can I remove
that file from SOUL?
Repeat the upload procedure for course description with a blank file.
The original file will be replaced by the newly uploaded file.

recorded chat session, what can I do?
To create a recorded chat session: |

navigation menu.
4. On the Welcome page of Chat Room, select the Enter live
chatting session option. Then press the Continue button.
5. Press the Start a new recorded session icon in the bottom
left-hand corner of the pop-up window.
6. A Session Name dialog box is shown.
7. Enter the name of the discussion session.
8. Press the Confirm button.
9. A message for the newly created session is printed in the
dialogue panel.
10. Enter the message and then press Post button.
11. At the end of the discussion, press the End recorded
session
icon. |

3.5.2 On the Chat Room screen, there is no response after typing in new messages and then pressing the Post button. What should I do?
First check whether your computer is still connected to the Internet. Second, check whether the light indicator in the top right-hand corner of the Chat Room window is red. A red light indicates there is a problem in the transmission. Please kindly close the Chat Room window and restart it.
This light indicator is used to show the performance of the transmission. A green or orange light indicates a fast or low transmission rate respectively. If the situation with a red light is persistent, please contact us at soul@hkuspace.hku.hk.

3.5.3 As an instructor, I want the discussion sessions to be reviewed by learners later or to be accessed by those who cannot attend the live sessions. What can I do?
Chat Room provides a record function and those recorded sessions are stored for instructors and learners to review. Follow the steps below to record a discussion session:

1. After getting in the Chat Room, press the Start a new recorded session
icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the pop-up window.
2. A Session Name dialog box is shown.
3. Enter the name of the discussion session.
4. Press the Confirm button.
5. A message for the newly created session is printed in the dialogue panel.
6. Enter the message and then press Post button.
7. At the end of the discussion, press the End recorded session icon. |

3.5.4 I did not attend a previous discussion session and would like to view the discussed items of that session. Where can I get these resources?
