  2.3.1 As an instructor, in a view to increase learners’ involvement in the course, I want to set up small discussion groups in my class. How can I make use of SOUL to facilitate it so that each learner can have an equal opportunity to express his/her view?
Instructors can make use of the Conference Room feature on SOUL. Simply speaking, it serves like a discussion forum, in which instructors can set up a number of discussion topics for learners to share their thoughts. Besides, small discussion groups can be set up; learners can only access their designated discussion group while the instructors will act as the moderator to facilitate their discussion. For details on how to set up discussion groups, please refer to the Conference Room section in the User Guide for Instructor.

Other learning activities such as group projects, debate and asking an expert can also be conducted via the Conference Room. Instructors can utilise this useful feature to promote and achieve collaborative learning.

  2.3.3 What are the differences between Conference Room and Chat Room?
Conference Room is an asynchronous e-learning tool while Chat Room is a synchronous one. Through Conference Room, learners can raise their questions and instructors/learners can respond to the questions when they log on to SOUL. Whereas in Chat Room, learners and instructors can communicate real-time; questions can be answered instantly and those participants can respond to the answers right away.

Both features can facilitate collaborative learning, enhancing interactivities between learners and instructors as well as among learners.

Instructors can utilise Conference Room to:
  • conduct instructor-led discussions;
• set up small discussion groups so that learners can take part in the discussion of their assigned group;
• set up discussion forums on different learning topics;
• respond to learners’ questions, where the answers will be shared with other learners.

Learners can utilise Conference Room to:
  • raise questions to instructors on learning topics;
• view the answers provided by instructors and the responses posted by other learners;
• express ideas on learning topics;
• provide suggestions to instructors or other learners to improve learning;
• share useful learning resources with other learners.
